The Coronary Care Unit provides care for patients who have experienced a heart attack or problems with their heart and provides specialty care by monitoring and treatment of symptoms and underlying conditions associated with heart disease. The unit also provides patients with education about their specific condition and referral to local cardiac rehabilitation services. The unit is involved in ongoing research trials and community projects, and annually offers 'The Peter Curteis Education Grant' to provide support for further education of junior medical and nursing staff.
Pharmacists form an integral part of both inpatient and outpatient care by ensuring the safe and effective use of pharmaceutical drugs. The pharmacists at Calvary Mater Newcastle support clinical trials by overseeing the procurement, correct formulation and dispensing of all therapeutic medicines required for effective treatment.
