Emergency Medicine

Acute, as opposed to chronic, care refers to active but short term treatment for a severe episode of illness, an urgent medical condition, or during recovery from surgery. Acute care may require a stay in the hospital emergency department and/or the assistance of diagnostic services, surgery, or follow-up care as an outpatient. Research within acute care at Calvary Mater Newcastle focuses on enabling patients to return to their homes and families as soon as possible by developing avenues of effective assisted health care known as 'hospital in the home'.
