Overview

Dr Fiona Day has been conducting research in the Department of Medical Oncology since 2012. Her main interest is in the improved treatment of gastrointestinal cancers such as colorectal (bowel) cancer, pancreas cancer and oesophageal cancer. Dr Day’s previous PhD research at the University of Melbourne looked at identifying different subtypes of colorectal cancer with the goal of treating each type differently. Her research roles include acting as principal investigator in clinical trials of new therapies and conducting studies that translate research findings into the clinic. Dr Day also participates in the wider research community. She serves as a reviewer for international scientific journals, Cancer Council NSW and the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC).

Publications / Achievements

Dr Day is currently leading the PALEO clinical trial in oesophageal cancer. This trial aims to relieve swallowing problems caused by oesophageal cancer while also maintaining patient quality of life. Dr Day is also the lead Calvary Mater Newcastle investigator multiple clinical trials treating colorectal (bowel) cancer.
