General Medicine

Internal Medicine

The Department of Medicine provides inpatient consultation across a range of subspecialties, ambulatory care and outreach clinics. Our unit continues to be involved with the work of The Hunter Alliance – a collaboration between Hunter New England Local Health District and the Primary Health Network, with projects in Diabetes and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). Both of these research streams are redesigning integrated models of care by bringing specialist care into the primary care setting.

Our department’s research is focused into the following areas:

  • Respiratory
  • Diabetes
  • Cardio-oncology
  • Neurology and Stroke
  • Gastroenterology
  • Drug and Alcohol
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Geriatrics

Our Researchers

Cardiology Department

Our Cardiology Department provides inpatient and outpatient cardiac diagnostic services including exercise stress testing, cardiac ECHOs and ECG recording. A specialised Cardio-Oncology Clinic has been established by Acting Professor Aaron Sverdlov to run clinical trials assessing patients with co-existing cancer and heart failure. The aim is to improve patient management and outcomes through better understanding of the mechanisms involved, whilst discovering novel biomarkers and therapies. While the vision is to establish, grow and lead a comprehensive research and clinical program aimed at improving outcomes for patients with heart failure.

Alcohol and Drug Unit

Our Alcohol and Drug Unit provides a variety of services to the patients and families of Calvary Mater Newcastle and the Hunter region. Research includes counselling, relapse prevention, consultation to other teams and withdrawal treatment. Service expertise was provided for the Special Commission of Inquiry into Methamphetamine (‘Ice’).
