Radiation Oncology / Medical Physics
Radiation oncology and medical physics is the assessment, management, and treatment of cancer using state of the art imaging techniques and equipment. The delivery of high quality radiotherapy treatment utilises linear accelerators, brachytherapy units, imaging (CT,MRI,PET) and 3D-planning systems.
Our department is staffed by Medical, Nursing, and Allied Health professionals and plays an active role in the development of integrated cancer research, promoting a multidisciplinary approach to care.
Research in the department encompasses a wide variety of aspects of radiation oncology including: improving planning, treatment, safety and cost-effectiveness. We are prominent in several research areas including: prostate cancer trials, MRI in radiotherapy and treatment verification and safety.
Many of our radiation oncologists are active members of the TROG Cancer Research, Australia and New Zealand’s specialist clinical research group for cancers that can be treated with radiotherapy.
Research within the department is coordinated by the Radiation Oncology Clinical Trials Unit.
